‘토템’적 존재를 상상하다.
우리는 인류세의 위기(기후위기, 멸종, 인수공통전염병 등)에 인간중심적인 시각의 오만함을 버리고 실존적 위협에서 벗어나기 위해
어쩌면 원시적 형태의 ‘애니미즘(animism)’을 소환해야 자연과의 조화, 공존의 가치에 필요한 정신이 되어줄지도 모른다.
모든 자연현상 하나하나에 신비스러운 힘이 있고 깊은 물, 높은 산, 호랑이 등에게 정령이 있다고 믿던 시절,
우리 조상들은 두려움의 대상이면서 숭배의 대상으로 여겼던 동물들이 있었다.
그 영험한 동물이 시공간을 넘어와 나쁜 기운을 막아주고 재앙과 역병을 물리치는 ‘토템’적 존재가 되어는 상상을 해보았다.
Imagining 'totemic' beings.
In order to escape the arrogance of an anthropocentric view of the crises of the Anthropocene (climate crisis, extinction, zoonotic pandemics, etc.) and to escape existential threats, we may need to summon a primitive form of animism to provide the spirit necessary for the value of harmony and coexistence with nature.
When our ancestors believed that all natural phenomena had mystical powers and that deep waters, high mountains, and tigers had spirits, there were certain animals that were both feared and worshipped. I imagined that these spiritual animals could transcend time and space and become "totemic" beings that warded off bad spirits and repelled disasters and pestilence.
